Mangystau: Underground Mosques and White Canyons, 9 Days
A nine-day journey through Mangystau — an introduction to the desert landscapes of western Kazakhstan, ancient shrines and the Caspian Sea coast. The route begins in Aktau and continues by 4x4 vehicles to Mount Sherkala, the Airakty rock massifs, the Tuzbair salt flat and the white remnants of Bozzhyra. Three nights in tent camps will allow you to see the landscapes in evening and morning light. The program also includes visits to the underground mosques of Karaman-Ata and Beket-Ata in Oglandy, an exploration of the Kenty-Baba necropolis and a free day in Aktau after the expedition phase. This journey is for those ready for dirt roads, hiking on uneven terrain and simple camp conditions. No technical climbing is involved. Stopping points and camp locations are chosen by the team taking into account the weather, road conditions and current visiting regulations.

Accommodation
Aktau — 3* hotel, 4 nights: at the beginning of the trip and after the expedition phase. Zhanaozen — hotel, 1 night. In the areas of Airakty, Tuzbair and Bozzhyra — tent camps, 3 nights in total. Base accommodation is two people per room or tent. In field camps, there are no stationary bathrooms or guaranteed showers. The organization of a portable toilet, technical water supply and equipment lists are clarified before booking. Specific hotels and camp sites are confirmed separately.
Transport
Prepared 4×4 off-road vehicles with local drivers are used for the expedition part. A significant portion of the route passes along dirt roads and rocky sections. The vehicle make, number of passengers and luggage placement are agreed upon at the time of booking. A separate car or minivan may be used for airport and city transfers.
Good to Know
The journey includes remote areas with limited mobile signal and several nights without standard hotel amenities. You will need closed shoes with good grip, warm clothing for the evening, a windbreaker, headgear, sunscreen, a flashlight and personal medications. A soft travel bag is more convenient for luggage. In Beket-Ata, a hike down and a return climb are required. Modest clothing covering shoulders and knees is necessary for visiting shrines; women are recommended to have a headscarf. Photography inside is subject to local agreement. After rain, certain dirt sections may become impassable. The team may change the order of stops and camp locations. Swimming in the Caspian Sea is possible only under suitable weather conditions and sea state.
